Mission Critical Commissioning
for Data Centres

Condensing Unit being commissioned for a UK Data Centre

Why Data Centre Commissioning is Vital

Commissioning is a critical process, especially for data centres, where an array of complex systems must function seamlessly. This process is essential to ensure that all components work correctly and to minimize disruptions during potential failures.

Strategic Data Centre Commissioning

Data centre commissioning takes a strategic approach by examining potential failure modes and introducing these failures into the infrastructure to verify the performance of redundancies. It verifies that equipment can be safely shut down for service and that backup systems function when needed.

What is Data Centre Commissioning?

As per the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), data centre commissioning is a “quality-oriented process for achieving, evaluating, and documenting that the performance of buildings, systems, and assemblies meets defined objectives and criteria.”

Experience and Expertise

Sutton Commissioning & Management Consultancy is highly experienced in managing data centre commissioning projects in the Middle East and the UK, with a special focus on TCCF certification through the Uptime Institute.

Key Elements of Sutton’s Commissioning Role

Sutton’s role in managing data center commissioning encompasses several critical elements:

– Design and Planning

– Site Survey & Kick Off

– Commissioning Script Development from level 2-5

– Review of Commissioning & Contractor Start up Plan

– Pre-Commissioning Works

– Implementation of Testing and Commissioning for Level 3-5

– Review of Project Documentation

– Managing TCCF Certification

The Five-Step Commissioning Process

According to ASHRAE, full commissioning is a five-step process that emphasizes thorough documentation and a structured approach to commissioning. It should commence at the design stage with the involvement of a Commissioning Agent (CxA).

The Role of the CxA

The CxA plays a crucial role by reviewing plans as early as possible, ideally during the programming stage but no later than the design development stage. They ensure that all essential components, such as valves, switches, gauges, and controls, are not only included but also installed correctly to facilitate commissioning and operation.

Data Center Levels of Commissioning

When commissioning a data center, following these commissioning levels can help stakeholders minimize risk and ensure that all systems are thoroughly tested. This approach maintains a structured “commissioning sequence” and adheres to a workflow where each stage is completed before moving on to the next.

Maximizing Data Center Commissioning

By combining these data center commissioning levels with the ASHRAE Commissioning Process, the delivery of commissioning in a Data Center project is optimized for success.
